Dr. Dundas was the President and CTO of Soundhawk Corporation, an industry first, direct-to-consumer fully customizable hearing device targeted to the mildly hearing-impaired population, and former Director of Audiology at UCSF Medical Center. He was a research Audiologist at Starkey Hearing Technologies, involved in the development of fitting algorithms, signal processing techniques, and compressor design. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University with a PhD in audiology and biomedical engineering, The University of Akron and McMaster University, and completed his clinical training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Dundas has published original research related to hearing device performance, device fitting, prescriptive approaches, cochlear function, hearing instrument fitting, and signal processing technique performance, as well as authored reference chapters regarding balance function assessment.","photo_link":"Drew Dundas2_highres.jpg (https:\/\/dl.airtable.com\/.attachments\/e60268e2fc345dfc7b1908268250a0b6\/b90ca3a5\/DrewDundas2_highres.jpg)","sessions_ids_listed":"124,127","session_names":"Earlens | Why Earlens - A Paradigm Shift in the Treatment of Hearing Impairment, Earlens | Business & Technology Considerations for the Future of REAL Hearing Healthcare","status":"Active","linkedin_url":"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drewdundas\/#","sessions":[{"ID":23866,"post_author":"1","post_date":"2021-11-04 19:04:17","post_date_gmt":"2021-11-04 23:04:17","post_content":"Recent publications have pointed to the value of early identification and effective treatment of hearing impairment via restoration of speech audibility over the broadest possible frequency range, and yet, less than 20% of candidates make regular use of hearing aid technology. The narrow bandwidth of effective amplification achieved with conventional hearing aids commonly results in poor sound quality and limited performance in a wide variety of listening situations, and leads to unmet expectations of the overall listening experience. The Earlens system overcomes these limitations by directly activating the structures of the middle ear via a custom built transducer \u2018Lens\u2019 which is placed deep in the ear canal by an ENT physician, followed by processor calibration and programming by an audiologist. Direct activation produces 2.5x the audible, processed bandwidth of conventional devices, allowing advanced digital signal processing to perform to its full potential and generating a significant improvement in speech understanding even in background noise, coupled with strong patient preference in terms of overall sound quality. This session will explore the differences between traditional hearing devices and the Earlens system, in terms of method of action, theoretical benefits of enhanced audible bandwidth, laboratory and real-world patient outcomes.","post_title":"Earlens | Why Earlens - A Paradigm Shift in the Treatment of Hearing Impairment","post_excerpt":"","post_status":"publish","comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","post_password":"","post_name":"aud124","to_ping":"","pinged":"","post_modified":"2021-11-04 19:04:27","post_modified_gmt":"2021-11-04 23:04:27","post_content_filtered":"","post_parent":0,"guid":"https:\/\/archive.fcomnow.com\/2021\/session\/earlens-a-paradigm-shift-in-the-treatment-of-hearing-impairment\/","menu_order":124,"post_type":"session","post_mime_type":"","comment_count":"0","filter":"raw"},{"ID":23869,"post_author":"1","post_date":"2021-11-04 19:04:29","post_date_gmt":"2021-11-04 23:04:29","post_content":"Recent developments in hearing technology and delivery models have created new sources of competition for providers. When there is little to no difference between the hearing aid devices or technologies in a medical practice and those offered for far less in a Big Box store or online, what is there to distinguish medical practices? While the battle may feel unwinnable, audiology-in-ENT practices are actually in an enviable position in the marketplace due to their focus on the effective treatment of hearing impairment and access to both established patients and a steady stream of new candidates seeking expert opinions and solutions to their everyday challenges. In this session, the changing marketplace, legislation and technology will be discussed, and a vision for sustainable growth and development will be presented specifically for the ENT-based audiology market.","post_title":"Earlens | Business & Technology Considerations for the Future of REAL Hearing Healthcare","post_excerpt":"","post_status":"publish","comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","post_password":"","post_name":"aud127","to_ping":"","pinged":"","post_modified":"2021-11-04 19:04:30","post_modified_gmt":"2021-11-04 23:04:30","post_content_filtered":"","post_parent":0,"guid":"https:\/\/archive.fcomnow.com\/2021\/session\/earlens-business-technology-considerations-for-the-future-of-real-hearing-healthcare\/","menu_order":127,"post_type":"session","post_mime_type":"","comment_count":"0","filter":"raw"}],"attending":"In-Person","in_person":"checked"},"day":null,"duration":null,"end_date":null,"end_time":null,"session_code":null,"session_description":null,"session_id":null,"session_name":null,"session_objectives":null,"session_type":null,"session_type_detail":null,"society":null,"start_date":null,"start_time":null,"test_speaker_link":null,"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
