Traditional teaching tells us that functional endoscopic sinus surgery is performed to reestablish ventilation of the sinuses. This talk will examine the evidence that the true benefit is to promote adequate irrigation and topical drug delivery to the sinuses
After attending this activity, attendees will be able to:
1. Discuss and reevaluate what the surgeon is actually accomplishing in endoscopic sinus surgery
2. Compare the initial reventilation theories to more recent assumptions that the primary benefit of ESS is to facilitate irrigation, the mechanism of benefit of sinus intervention
