Michael Patete, M.D., Florida Medical Association President will do a deep dive into the nuances of Florida’s health care policy and how it shapes the laws that govern the medical profession. The Florida Medical Association is the premier leader in advocating for physicians across the state. At the State level, physicians face a range of professional obstacles including advocating for patient safety against non-physician practitioners who wish to practice medicine and fighting for basic supplies, such as adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) as experienced during the COVID-19 fueled shortage. During the 2021 Legislative Session, the FMA successfully staved off those who wish to impede on physicians practicing medicine and put laws in place that ensures physicians have the proper PPE during a public health emergency. Nationally, the FMA has a team in Washington DC that is actively fighting for fair payment and fair allocations in healthcare reform. Additionally, Dr. Patete will focus on issues facing otolaryngologists and how specialty societies and the Florida Medical Association can work together to fight those who wish make practicing medicine more burdensome. This course is designed to guide fellow physicians across Florida’s legislative landscape.
After attending this activity, attendees will be able to:
1. Discuss the political climate of physicians at the State and National level
2. Demonstrate the power of a strong legislative team
3. Prepare physicians to fight for the practice of medicine
